thousands of people are expected to join the ever expanding occupy wall street protest. organizers are calling for students across the nation to boycott classes. good afternoon. i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. about two weeks into their demonstrations over corporate greed, wall street protesters are getting support from the biggest unions. >> it started in new york city and spread across the country. tomorrow, they come to washington. michelle franzen has the latest. >> reporter: hundreds of union members joined the growing numbers of wall street protesters in a march against corporate greed, government corruption an a broken economy. >> american who is have been hurt by the economic crisis, the political corruption. >> there's no protection.

no matter who we vote for, nothing happens. people feel like they are getting shafted. >> reporter: social inequality along with rising unemployment struck a cord with the largest and most powerful unions. >> they are fighting to make sure the rich, the mull pi billionaires pay their fair share. it's why we joined forces. >> reporter: what started as a grass roots rally over two weeks ago swelled into a nationwide movement. sympathy protests have been held in 50 cities from coast-to-coast. >> until we start coming together and acting out, no one is going to hear and know what's going on. >> reporter: protesters united in frustrations and passions. >> this is the beginning of the people's revolution. >> reporter: and determined to keep going now that the movement

has become more organized. >> it's in the early stages and has to define itself. >> reporter: protesters are prepared to stay here and camp out indefinitely. as the numbers grow, they could outgrow the space. the city may ask demonstrators to find a new headquarters. >> occupy d.c. is planning events here in washington tomorrow including a protest from noon until 3:00. demonstrations along k street. chris gordon will have a live preview on news 4 at 5:00. two people dead, six injured after a gunman opened fire at a california cement quarry. they are looking for this man in the city of cupertino. he was at a safety meeting, got angry and left. when he came back, he opened

fire. there was a television show in san jose. amanda knox is spending her first full day at home in the state, adjusting to life outside prison walls. during a brief press conference, she thanked her supporters saying she's overwhelmed to be home. >> what's important for me is saying thank you to everyone who has believed in me, who's supported my family. my family is the most important thing to me right now. i just want to go be with them right now. thank you for being there for me. >> as for her future, knox's

father says she would like to return to the university of washington to finish her degree. he says he's worried about what the effect of four years behind bars may have had on her. political battles are sharpening over the jobs bill. the president tours the nation demanding congress pass it immediately. senate democrats are balking at a key provision, tax hikes on the upper middle class. steve handelsman has more from capitol hill. >> what do we want? >> jobs. >> reporter: they demanded congress do whatever it takes to put americans back to work. private companies added 91,000 jobs last month. unemployment stuck at 9.1 and his approval dropping, president obama is pushing his jobs plan hard. >> it will put money back into the pockets of working families. >> reporter: he pointed a finger

at house republican, eric cantor. >> he won't let it have a vote. do they not have the time? >> reporter: today's problem is democrats. mr. obama is out of sync with his own party. >> if the president wants to keep traveling around the country demanding a vote, focus the criticism on democrats. >> reporter: they rejected the obama plan to hike taxes on families making $250,000 a year. billionaires fine. millionair millionaires, fine, but not on families making $250,000 a year. >> they are not rich. in large parts of the country, that kind of income does not get you a big home or lots of vacations. >> reporter: the white house did not disagree. >> senate democrats have a different idea that we think would work. >> reporter: republicans in both

houses say any tax hikes are bad ideas. now, democrats are debating about whose taxes to hike. so the obama jobs bill cannot pass as is. it's not just because of republicans. i'm steve handelsman, news 4, capitol hill. ten virginians, including several from our area will get professional experience at the white house. they are among the 140 selected from across the country to participate in the white house internship program. seven maryland residents and one from the district have been selected. the program provides an opportunity for interns to gain experience and build leadership skills to work with the vice president, the first lady and the president's cabinet. >> it's quite a line on the resume, too. >> you betcha. let's get a look at this weather. we cannot get enough of this. >> hopefully, it sticks around for the weekend.

doug is in the storm center with the latest. >> a beautiful fall afternoon with plenty of sunshine. not a cloud in the sky, really. current temperature, 74 degrees. dew point of 51. the humidity is nice and low. the wind out of the north-northwest. they have been gusting to 15 to 25 miles per hour. currently, no gusts right now, the wind at 12 miles per hour. now, the current temperature, 72 in gaithersburg, 75 in culpeper and fredericksburg. the warm spot is charlottesville at 77 degrees. the eastern shore, the temperature of 73 degrees. doppler radar, once again, we are all dry. i expect the doppler to stay dry through the end of the week and the weekend. we are in for a fantastic stretch of weather. the satellite for the mid-atlant

mid-atlantic, no cloudiness at all out there. nice weather through 7:00. through 9:00 when the temperature drops to 64. by 11:00, the temperature down to 61 degrees. the front moves through overnight into tomorrow morning and lowers temperatures a little bit. i'll let you know what the temperatures look like tomorrow morning and tomorrow in the full forecast. >> thanks, doug. today, students across the d.c. area left the school buses and minivans behind and walked to school. there were 3,000 events taking place across the country. hundreds of elementary students were escorted. the district some students started with a little stretching before they began pounding the pavement. >> why not? walking is fun. it reduces congestion on the roads and car emissions. it's healthy. >> maryland lieutenant governor, anthony brown unveiled a $1.2

million grant spent on improves walk ways and bicycle routes around the prince gorges schools. in today's education nation, bringing students together through language. a charter school in columbia heights is teaching in english and spanish regardless of their first language. >> same position. good. washington redskins owner dan snyder bought this fancy new ride. it's a little fixer upper. he bought the lady ann for $70 million. a cool $70 million. if you were wondering, the listing price was $86 million. they call the 224-foot boat one of the 100 largest yachts in the world. six cabins, a library, theater room and a gymnasium for the whole redskins team. you can put them all on there. >> we need to do a story about that. i mean go on board. >> that looks like it's in the greek islands. we could do that. a couple weeks you think? brianna plays football for the pinkling, michigan pirates. something happened that she will never forget. >> she kicked the winning field

supporters and said she's overwhelmed to be home. her father says it focus is getting amanda reassociated with just being a regular person, again. members of the biggest unions joined protesters on wall street. the organization called occupy wall street has been demonstrating against corporate greed. among the demands, free college tuition and cancelling all debts including credit card and home mortgage. we'll have a live preview at the top of the hour. stocks rallies to finish near session highs. the dow jumped over 100 points in the final hour this afternoon. the closing bell, it was up 130 points. nasdaq shot up 56 points. the s&p 500 was up 21 points. a chilling turn today in the

involuntary manslaughter trial of michael jackson's physician. >> jurors heard from jackson himself in terms of a cell phone recording. >> reporter: during opening statements, we heard part of a conversation recorded by dr. murray's iphone where michael jackson sounded incoherent. today, we heard the entire conversation. it gave us a glimpse. >> that audio recording be marked people's 96 for identification. >> reporter: jurors heard a troubling recording between himself and michael jackson six weeks before the singer died. on the recording, jackson was slurring and sounded incoherent talking about his upcoming show saying it had to be phenomenal.

girlfriends while he should have been watching michael jackson. he was living a multiple life juggling women and a famous patient. a forensic computer investigator found evidence that dr. murray was checking e-mails on his phone in the hours before the singer's death. >> now, this stage of the trial is being called the csi phase. jurors are expected to hear from forensics investigators. meanwhile, a concert honoring the pop stars will go out without one of the biggest acts on the lineup. >> the black eyed peas were supposed to perform. they pulled out because of that they are calling unavoidable circumstances. famous artists include christina aguilera, clo green.

>> thanks, doug. a desperate plea today from parents of a missing baby in kansas city, missouri. >> bring her home. our two other boys are waiting for her. please, just drop her off anywhere. we don't care, just somewhere safe. >> the 10-month-old hasn't been seen since monday when she was sleeping in her crib. police believe she's been abducted. >> reporter: late tuesday night, detectives searched this kansas city home. she disappeared from her crib 24 hours earlier. police and fbi agents dusted for fingerprints, combing the neighborhood and repelling off a nearby cliff searching for a clue that might lead to the little girl. her father called to report her missing after checking her room around 4:00 tuesday morning.

the mother was home, the father came home from work at the time, noticed the baby was gone and called 911 right away. >> reporter: a window at the home appeared to have been tampered with. investigators interviewed the parents hoping for information to help find the little girl. >> they have been cooperating. they have the most intimate knowledge of what's going on in the house. they are an important part of the investigation. >> reporter: more than 100 people involved in the search. >> i think about the little child. you know, what's really happening to her. >> one neighbor reported her husband saw a suspicious man holding the baby at the time baby lisa went missing. >> he was carrying a baby, pushing it against his chest. my husband kept looking at him. the gentleman kept walking. >> reporter: they were pursuing

celebration. a man stole a forklift and took it on a joyride. the video shows stephen reagan riding the machine through a field and cemetery in july. he stole the forklift from a construction sight. he then led police on a 15-mile-an-hour chase until a flat tire brought him to a start. he stole the forklift for a local gang. they are planning to use it in a larger operation. yeah, it's a big operation. >> and a slow operation. still ahead on news 4, neighbors can't even go outside at night. the effort to stop prostitution
